Let's face it. Nobody just gives you equipment for free. They just let you USE it at no charge for as long as you are their customer. If you leave the processor, you have to give the equipment back. That's certainly not really a bad deal considering how much good equipment costs. But it's not exactly "gratis", is it? There are often significant trade-offs for the privilege of using 'no-cost' equipment, depending on which approach the Merchant uses.  Rates and fees are often higher, much higher, than they would be if no 'free' equipment was involved. More importantly, contract terms are longer and financial penalties for early breach of contract are usually much higher. Because of these factors, for many merchants the cost of 'no charge' credit card processing equipment turns out to be very expensive indeed!So the question is: Are "no charge" credit card machines offers a good deal? The answer is: It depends on what kind of business you are, how you do business, and which processor you do business with. If your business is doing large Visa/MasterCard volume, say $15,000 or more monthly, you would generally be way ahead financially  by purchasing your processing equipment (at a reasonable price of course) and getting a lower discount rate. Your savings resulting from the lower rates will pay for the equipment in no time. On the other hand, if your business does very little credit card volume (or you are a new start-up business), it may be wise to use your cash resources to get your business off the ground and pay a few nickels and dimes more in processing fees instead of the major expense of buying or leasing equipment.
