The Senate has recently passed an amendment to the financial reform bill that will have a significant impact on how consumers use their debit cards.
Our take: We do not think it’s fair for consumers to be forced to pick up the costs of accepting debit for giant retailers. We also don’t believe retailer claims that consumers will see any savings from this legislation. In fact, retailers themselves have admitted they probably wouldn’t pass on real savings – and I’m not interested in “benefits” like “free gift wrap,” especially if it means we’lll have to pay more for debit card use.
