Merchant Tax Reporting

The Housing and Recovery Act of 2008 included Amendment 6050W, Merchant Tax Reporting.  The purpose of this Amendment is to encourage accurate tax reporting.  The Amendment requires all payment processing organizations to report gross sales,  collect and verify TIN numbers, and,  for those merchants who have not provided a valid TIN and name match, to perform backup withholding beginning January 2012.    This regulation reporting is in effect for the 2011 tax reporting year.

Mobile Payment Wars–Verifone vs Square

Mobile payment processing is hot these days.  The stakes are heating up, and the competitors are playing hardball.

Verfione and Square represent the ‘king of the hlil’ and the ‘new guy on the block’ among mobile payment players.   And Verifone has called Square out on alleged security shortcomings, which should be very important to merchants and consumers alike.

Here’s a link you may find very interesting:  http://techcrunch.com/2011/03/09/verifone-takes-the-gloves-off-accuses-square-of-serious-security-hole/

APF and NABU Fees

ANY_ITEM_HERE

We are frequently asked about the Visa APF and MasterCard NABU fees merchants have noticed on their monthly merchant statements lately.  Following is a brief explanation.

ANY_ITEM_HERE

Starting on July 1, 2009, Visa is introducing a U.S. Acquirer Processing Fee (APF). The fee will be $0.0195 on all Visa branded authorizations acquired in the U.S. regardless of where the issuer/cardholder is located. On April 18, 2009, MasterCard implemented a new Network Access and Brand Usage (NABU). Fee of $0.0185 for all U.S. based sales and credit/refund transactions.

While fee increases are never welcome, particularly in bad economic times, it should be noted that for most merchants, these fees are insignificant, amounting to nothing more than small change.  At the same time, merchants should understand that these fees apply to ALL l merchants and ALLl processors, so beware of unscrupulous vendors who will claim that merchants won’t be subject to these fees if they switch to their company.  Absolutely not true.
