Dept. of Justice Seeks to Block Verifone/Hypercom Deal

According to the Associated Press (AP), the US Justice Department on May 12, 2011 filed a civil antitrust lawsuit in federal district court to stop Verifone’s planned acquisition of rival point-of-sale manufacturer Hypercom Corp. Apparently the DOJ contends that because the two point-of-sale terminal manufacturers together control some 60 percent of the POS market, the proposed sale would serve to drive up prices of payment processing terminals.

MasterCard Announces Increases for Spring 2011

MasterCard Worldwide has announced some changes to Interchange rates and assessments, scheduled to take effect later this spring.

Included among them is an increase in the Interchange rate for World Merit III, a MasterCard branded Rewards card, from 1.73% plus $0.10, to 1.77% plus $.10 per item.

Also, MasterCard assessment fees, a flat transaction fee added to the cost of processing each credit card transaction, will increase from 0.11 percent to 0.12 percent on consumer and commercial credit volume for transactions of $1000 or more.

Other relatively minor changes involve Supermarket Base and Enhanced Supermarket Base rates, and World Full UCAF and World Merchant UCAF (both e-commerce Interchange categories).
