The Hypercom T7P terminal has been around awhile and has gained a reputation as a workhorse. It comes in two basic print versions: a thermal printer and a friction printer.
The Hypercom T7P has a keyboard that is exceptionally well labeled and is therefore very easy to learn and use. Basic functions such as void, refund, reports, void and so on have their own clearly identified labeled keys; you can’t get much easier than that.
The terminal function of the T7P is lightning fast–at least by the standards when it was first introduced many years ago, but it’s still quite impressive. The shortcoming of the T7P in the opinion of this reviewer is the print function, particularly the friction model which is NOT recommended. The print quality, particularly on the inside customer copy, is practically invisible, the paper roll is too thin, the ink cartridges are hard to find and obscenely overpriced, and the receipt printing is very slow
. The thermal version of the printer is somewhat better–at least it uses inexpensive thermal paper rolls and no ribbon cartridge at all.
Summary: The Hypercom T7P is a good backup machine, or a good choice for a new business that does not have demanding processing needs. On the other hand, if your business establishment is very busy, the T7P is not a good choice for you because the slowness of the printer will cause back-ups at checkout. The T7P is a particularly poor choice for restaurant applications due to the undersized roll width and poor customer copy, which does not lend itself to tip entry and adjustments. On the positive side, you can pick up a good refurbished Hypercom T7P very inexpensively these days.
