Hypercom T7Plus Review

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

The Hypercom T7Plus credit card machine improves many of the shortcomings of it’s predecessors in the Hypercom family.hypercom_t7plus It’s thermal printer is eons ahead of the flimsy friction or thermal mechanisms of the T7P and even the next generation huge footprinted T77.  More importantly, it’s “SureLoad” (TM) paper loading mechanism makes changing rolls a snap, thus eliminating one of the other major shortcomings of the old T7P and T77 lines.

Otherwise, The T7Plus shares many of the major positives of previous offerings by Hypercom.  It’s 35 key keyboard is well organized and well thought out, thus making the T7Plus extremely easy to learn and operate.  Plus, the terminal function of this machine is lightning fast.  It also has ports for external pin pad and check reader.

On the downside, in the opinion of this reviewer (and many merchants for whom we have installed this model), the T7Plus has a decidedly flimsy, plasticy toylike feel and appearance.  Not that the Hypercom T7Plus is necessarily more trouble-prone or less dependable than any other comparable model.  But still, we feel it’s hard to imagine this machine standing up for years and years in a busy demanding sales environment as many older machines have proven capable of.

In summary, the Hypercom T7Plus is probably a good choice for merchants with medium usage demand.  Having been around for several years now, there are many good buys on refurbished models which buyers should also find attractive.  But if you are a busy restaurant or retail location in which your credit card terminal will take a beating, there are probably better choices for you in our opinion.

Nurit 2085 Product Review

Friday, August 14th, 2009

nurit_2085Litman, a company purchased by Verifone a few years back, makes a pretty solid credit card machine. One of it’s older models still going
very strong is the dependable Nurit 2085.

The 2085 is solidly built, features a fast thermal printer, and has a well organized and thought out keyboard design that makes it a snap to learn and use.

One of the most useful features of the Nurit 2085 is it’s multi-merchant capability. This credit card terminal will hold up to nine separate merchant accounts, which is ideal, for example, for MD offices in which multlipe physicians share the same office and each needs his/her own credit card machine.

The Nurit 2085 is dial-up only and features a port for an external pin pad for pin debit processing. While it’s footprint isn’t as small as some of the more recent terminal offerings, it has everything, including durability and dependability, that most merchants would need. And, being a somewhat older model, excellent refurbished models are available at excellent pricing.

All told, we like this machine a lot, and highly recommend it for any merchant looked for a lot of bang for their credit card machine buck.

Hypercom T7P Product Review

Friday, August 14th, 2009

The Hypercom T7P terminal has been around awhile and has gained a reputation as a workhorse.  It comes in two basic print versions:  a thermal printer and a friction printer.

The Hypercom T7P has a keyboard that is exceptionally well labeled and is therefore very easy to learn and use.  Basic functions such as void, refund, reports, void and so on have their own clearly identified labeled keys; you can’t get much easier than that.

The terminal function of the T7P is lightning fast–at least by the standards when it was first introduced many years ago, but it’s still quite impressive.  The shortcoming of the T7P in the opinion of this reviewer is the print function, particularly the friction model which is NOT recommended.  The print quality, particularly on the inside customer copy, is practically invisible, the paper roll is too thin,  the ink cartridges are hard to find and obscenely overpriced, and the receipt printing is very slowT7P.  The thermal version of the printer is somewhat better–at least it uses inexpensive thermal paper rolls and no ribbon cartridge at all.

Summary:  The Hypercom T7P is a good backup machine, or a good choice for a new business that does not  have demanding processing needs.    On the other hand, if your business establishment is very busy, the T7P is not a good choice for you because the slowness of the printer will cause back-ups at checkout.   The T7P is a particularly poor choice for restaurant applications due to the undersized roll width and poor customer copy, which does not lend itself to tip entry and adjustments.  On the positive side, you can pick up a good refurbished Hypercom T7P very inexpensively these days.

American Express to Announce Fee Increase

Friday, August 14th, 2009

According to a major processing source, effective October 1st, 2009, the American Express Monthly Flat Fee will increase from $5.95  to $7.95 per month.    The Monthly Flat Fee is an often-used option for merchants expected to do very small amounts of American Express volume (less than $5,000 annually).   The fee is also required (regardless of volume) for Internet-physical delivery, MOTO, and home-based merchants.  This unverified information was per a memo distributed by a major national processor distributed to it’s agent base on August 13, 2009.   According to the memo, American Express will formally notify affected merchants in the near future.
